Week Four: Artificial Intelligence

I handed in my first piece of coursework this week, a day before it was due. Overall I was reasonably happy with the final version and am excited and a little nervous waiting for the results. In the lab I was given two more pieces of coursework: Coursework two and three. For coursework two I have been tasked to analyse a problem situation with regards to task, context and user needs. This is the first piece of coursework where I have had the opportunity to decide on the subject of the research myself, and am looking forward to starting it. Coursework three is this blog!

This week I have been reading through the required text: “Interaction Design: Computing Science Meets Cognitive Science”. Reading through the book there is a strong influence from the field of psychology. Combining psychology and computing, ambient intelligence is when a system operates in the real world (not just at home or the office) and more importantly (at least to me) it provides at least some semblance of intelligence.

The subject of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in computers has always interested me. Some people claim that AI is failing or that it is impossible, however I believe that the complete opposite is happening. It may not yet be at the level many people think of when discussing AI, but it has been successful in many diverse fields. An AI even beat the world’s best player at chess (although the computer and the chess player didn’t quite look the same as in the picture above!).
