Week Three: Usability and user experience

This week was hectic for me in terms of work; while I have kept up-to-date with the interaction design coursework I keep on thinking of things I can change or add. At this point I have designed and tested an interactive TV for myself and another person and have begun discussing their differences. In the lab we discussed usability and user experience more thoroughly and went over what is expected from us in task 3, the final part of our first coursework.

I learnt that whilst user experience and usability are very important when designing an interactive product they are separate things and one doesn’t necessarily lead to the other, but often can. Usability is defined as the ease of use of a product and how efficient a user can learn how to accomplish a required operation. User experience is more personal; it’s about how a person feels when using a product.

During a lab for another module I was told about Mendeley (http://www.mendeley.com/), a piece of referencing software that could not only prove useful for the other module but for my research projects in Interaction Design. I decided to use my current knowledge to briefly assess Medeleys interaction based on usability and user experience.

Usability

User Experience

Hard to learn

Initially frustrating

Once learnt, easy to perform needed tasks

Once learnt, it can be satisfying to use.
