This week we spent the majority of the time examining the coursework, paying particular attention to the first task: designing an Interactive Television (iTV) based on my own requirements. We were asked to define the activities that we would like to carry out and define their context. We also discussed what constitutes good and bad design. I have completed Task one of my coursework and created a report showing the basic stages in designing and testing an iTV.
I learnt that how we create user experiences and how we interact and communicate with technology define Interaction Design. It involves many disciplines including Human Computer Interaction and cognitive ergonomics. When these different disciplines work together, there can be a conflict of ideas, with each department having its own different requirements. However diversity generates new ideas, with each group having a specialist area.
Interaction Design is a very interesting subject and unlike anything I was expecting from a computer science course. I have begun reading books on the subject and the wide variety of disciplines that can be (and should be) involved in the design of a device is staggering. It made me wonder just how much time and effort had gone into producing and designing not only the underlying software of a device such as my mobile phone, but the actual hardware.
